New York City

New York City is now days one of the biggest and most important cities in the world. But how did this begin?
Originally was this place founded by the Dutch in 1624 as a commercial trading post. The settlement was called New Amsterdam. However, in 1664 was growing town captured by the British and renamed to New York. It took place in civil war too because New York was one of the fighting centres in North America (1863). At the start of 19th century there were lots of immigrants coming into this place of prosperity and business to start a new live (most of them from Italy, China, and Spain).

New York today is the most populous city in the USA (the population is 8.3 million people and whole metropolitan area has more than 18.8 million people) and one of the most populous in the world. It’s the capital of commerce, finance, culture, fashion and entertainment. It’s also one of 3 headquarters of United Nations (the other 2 are in Geneva and Vienna). It has many nicknames such as The City That Never Sleeps, The Big apple or just The City (because it is said that NYC is the capital of the world). It’s situated in the northeast of the US on the coast of Atlantic Ocean. It has a large harbour.
New York consists of 5 boroughs (parts):
1)    Bronx
2)    Brooklyn
3)    Queens
4)    Staten Island
5)    Manhattan
From these the most known is surely Manhattan - full of skyscrapers - contains the most known streets and city districts. So what are the nicest and famous places?
1.    Broadway - maybe the most famous street, it diagonally crosses Manhattan and continues to The Bronx, there are many famous and successful theatres such as Broadway theatre etc.
2.    7th avenue - known as Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard north of Central Park, is a thoroughfare on the West Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It is southbound below Central Park and a two-way street north of the park
3.    Times Square - famous square in NYC with lot of neon commercials, crossing 7th avenue and Broadway, there is a headquarter of New York Times newspaper and annual celebration of New Year’s Eve
4.    Wall street - famous financial centre
5.    Rockefeller centre - 19 commercial buildings in a large area
6.    Empire State Building - skyscraper, 381m
7.    Chrysler Building - other famous skyscraper
8.    Central Park - really large public part of NYC, it’s a heart of New York, a few lakes and full of trees and green surrounded by the most expensive living places in NYC
9.    Carnegie Hall - on 7th avenue, it’s the place where every musicians wants to get when he or she is successful, there were performing such artists and icons of music as Benny Goodman (1938), Albert Ammons (boogie woogie), etc.
10.    China Town, Little Italy, Downtown, 5th avenue...


Washington D.C.
Is the capital of USA from 1800 founded on July 16, 1790. The city is located on the north bank of Potomac River and border with states of Virginia and Maryland. The city has population of 500 000 people but in metropolitan area more than 5 million. We are not able to find any skyscrapers here because is prohibited to build higher building than the top of Capitol (87.6 m). There are monuments such as White House, US Capitol, Washington monument...

Los Angeles
It’s the second largest city in California and second largest in USA (nickname the City of Angeles) with population of 3.8 million (but in metropolitan area 13 million). It’s world centre of business, entertainment, culture, fashion, science, technology and film. Because of Hollywood that is known as the Entertainment Capital of the World and because of entertainment industry in LA we can find here a home of many celebrities.
There are a lot of suburbs (předměstí) -> Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Malibu and Long Beach... There are a few skyscrapers, for example U.S. Bank Tower it’s very typical LA building.
